When Life is sweeter than retreat
Retreat is something we desperately yearn for in the midst of a Life that pushes, presses, and pulls at us.
When sweet retreat comes, we collapse into a pile of exhaustion. Resisting all of Life that wears us down has left us drained. We can scarcely manage to throw ourselves into a deep rest, and in that rest we’re barely aware of our parts slowly returning to us, arranging themselves back to a state un-pushed, un-pressed, and un-pulled by Life.
In this way, retreat becomes the holy land we seek as respite from Life. It is something to strive for, something we daydream of, and something we look back on wistfully.
But what happens when Life becomes sweeter than retreat? When Life and you are in communion, playing and exploring? When Life beckons you out from retreat and you excitedly follow, dancing back into it?
In this way, Life is what is holy. Retreat becomes the cherry on top, a harvest of the fruits of Life.
"Nowhere is more holy than this.
Right here is the sacred pilgrimage.
Live in alertness for such a moment, my Beloved,
As if it were your one meeting with the Creator."
